Background
Selly Oak Nursery is an independent
voluntary aided school with charitable status. The school was opened in 1904 and
was the first nursery school in Birmingham, transferring to its present site in
1921. We celebrated the foundation of Selly Oak Nursery
School in 2004. The present purpose-built school was donated by Mr and Mrs
George Cadbury and the land and premises are now held in Trust. The trustees are
supported by a Management Committee. Much of the maintenance and running costs
have to be met by charitable donations from trusts, successful bids and parent
fundraising.
We were originally built for
the families of the Cadbury workers. We now support families who live in the
immediate terraced housing area of Selly Oak as well as those further afield in
Selly Park, Bournville, Kings Norton, Northfield and Stirchley.
Our Vision
At Selly Oak Nursery we aim to:-
- provide a safe, happy and caring environment where your child can learn and
grow on an individual basis
- encourage positive attitudes to learning by establishing that it is fun,
exciting and absorbing.
- build children's self-esteem and confidence.
- encourage an understanding of others and their needs regardless of culture,
religion, gender or disability.
- establish a firm partnership with parents and carers to encourage
participation in their child's education.
- Give all children the opportunity to experience activities which will
promote curiosity, develop thinking skills enabling them to become self
motivated, reflective and independent learners.
It is the responsibility of the whole community to raise standards in the
basic skills of literacy and numeracy. The school was awarded the Basic Skills Quality
Mark in March 2007.
Values
At Selly Oak Nursery we will:
- provide unconditional nurture and care where everyone feels safe, valued
and respected
- enable children to develop as active, enthusiastic, confident learners
with high self esteem
- encourage an enthusiasm for life long learning
- facilitate effective play and creativity
- encourage exploration and risk taking in a safe environment
- provide an environment where everyone is listened to, valued, respected
and supported
- recognise individuality whilst providing for the needs of the group
- learn to help the children to appreciate and care for our environment at
home, in school, in our community and globally.
Principals of Foundation
Stage Education

Our Philosophy for Learning
Learning should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience in which children "explore, investigate, discover, create,
practice, rehearse, repeat, revise and
consolidate their developing knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes. During the Foundation Stage, many of these aspects of learning
are brought together through playing and talking". Effective learning involves:-
-
Children initiating activities that promote learning and enable them to learn from each other.
- Children learning through movement and all their senses
- Children having time to explore ideas and interests in depth
- Children feeling secure, which helps them to become confident learners
- Children learning in different ways and at different rates
- Children making links in their learning
- Creative and imaginative play activities, which promote the development and use
of language
The Rights of the Child - Extract from a book by Claire Warden, reflect:-

- The right to have someone to communicate with
- The right to have time to learn
- The right to be encouraged to use sensory learning
- The right to move
- The right to explore and discover
- The right to be in a safe environment
