Love of Reading
Selly Oak Nursery continue to promote a love of reading following Birmingham's Year of Reading. Reading continues to be a high priority at Nursery.
Research has shown on average children in Birmingham have less than 10 books at home. They have found that children in Birmingham are 7 years behind the average reading age for the UK.
Selly Oak Nursery School ensures that:
1) Every child will own a book (Nursery will give every child a book)
2) Every child will take part in World Book Day celebrations in March
We promote joining the local libraries amongst parents.
In Nursery we run lots of activities linked to reading. The Nursery library is introduced to the children and their families in the autumn 2 term. Each child has a reading diary where parents can record the books they are reading together and children can draw a face to indicate their thoughts. Smiley face stamps and certificates are issued as children read a set amount of books.
Exciting and stimulating story time sessions ensure that children are making progress in their story telling skills.
In the autumn 2 term we take the childre on trips to the theatre where we watch a production based on a book. Theatre shows we have visited include The Snow Dragon, We're going on a bear hunt and Me. The children enjoy watching theatre shows based around books they know and love.
